When we read the Bible, it's easy to feel like God wrote the wrong book. We come with twenty-first century problems and we are given a collection of ancient stories. Yet these stories form a unified narrative, one that points us to Jesus, and through Jesus, reshapes the way we see the world.
The Insect and the Buffalo is a short introduction, designed to help you re-read, re-think and re-engage with the Bible.

"Nothing is more urgent for the church today than learning to live in the story of the Bible. This delightful little book will enable the young reader to hear God's story in contemporary language and imagery. In fact, any Christian could benefit from taking some time to enjoy this creative little summary of the story of salvation. I heartily recommend this creative book as a faithful and appealing sketch of the true story of the world."

"Our world is directionless and lost. Like the proverbial bull in a China shop, our culture rampages forward with seemingly no thought for consequence, cost or coherence. What we desperately lack is a story, an expansive framework of meaning which brings wholeness, purpose and life. The Insect and the Buffalo is a brilliant and concise reminder that tucked away at the back of our dusty bookshelves, is such a life breathing story. Allpress and Shamy coax us to step back, look up and drink in the grandeur the narrative arc of redemption that is found in the collection of books known as the bible. Essential reading for anyone engaged in ministry and mission in the 21st century West."
Mark Sayers
Cultural Commentator and author
"When the Bible is reduced to motivational maxims, the credibility of faith itself is on the line. We need a generation of leaders who know the historical Gospel and who read the Bible intelligently in the light of it. The Insect and the Buffalo is exactly what we needed. Short, witty, sensible, and always geared to the big story. There is nothing like it. Nothing. Get it and read it."

Former Principal, Laidlaw College
The Insect and the Buffalo how the story of the Bible changes everything edition by Andrew Shamy Roshan Allpress Religion Spirituality eBooks
I found this book I was looking for a book on Old Testament culture and customs. When I read the first part of the first chapter, about the sociologist studying the BaMbuti tribe, I thought I had found what I was looking for, but it turns out it's not. I'm about a third of the way through so far (may update my review later), and the author does summarize some of the main Old Testament stories to help us see how we fit, although I wish it had gone deeper. This is probably a good read for someone new to the Bible, or who is returning to study the Bible with a fresh perspective. Just was not what I was thinking I would get when I purchased it. I'm also wondering - why so few reviews? Are there really so few readers (the book was published in April of 2011)? Most of the books I have read on Amazon have dozens if not hundreds.Product details

The Insect and the Buffalo how the story of the Bible changes everything edition by Andrew Shamy Roshan Allpress Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
This short book appears at first glance to be a simple overview of the major themes of the Bible. However, it is written in such an engaging way that the reader is drawn into the narrative, discovering along the way a hidden depth.
Easy to read, this book is great for those wondering what the Bible is all about. I can't recommend it highly enough
Whether you are new to the faith, a long time follower or just exploring, this book is for you. And given its size its not beyond anyone. It is an extremely well written and succinct exploration of the story of scripture that invites us in to examine the way we see the world and imagine our lives in light of the story it surmises. Can't reccomend it enough, buy it for you, your family, your friends and that guy at the bus stop.
I loved this book! It's a great sweep of the whole bible that you can read over a coffee in three-hours - giving you a grounded and thorough understanding of what this book is about and why. It has greatly inspired me to not only read the bible more, but with much greater understanding as to where each story fits ... and where I fit in God's story. Until now I thought that the bible was history that has 'happened.' Now I realise that the story is STILL being written and I am a part of it. STRONGLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone who wants to understand the bible but feels to intimidated to know where to start.
Why do I love this book?
Allpress and Shamy put it brilliantly in their second chapter "When we read the bible it's easy to feel like God wrote the wrong book... the bible seems surprisingly silent about our lives and issues... And, it doesn't set out a systematic theology of doctrines that we must believe."
They essentially ask what many young Christians are asking right now; 'How should this collection of ancient historical records, letters and poems have any bearing whatsoever on my life, here and now, in the 21st century?'
Not only do they answer this with intelligence and humour, but in so doing they call the reader into a more profound understanding of the all-encompassing and audacious claims made by this Gospel story.
I found this book a really helpful in giving me a lens for looking at the bible. I've grown up with the bible and wrestled with it. I often haven't known how to approach a text that people seem to be able to be used to justify whatever position people want it to.
What I loved about this little book was that it showed me that the bible is a story, with history. It has a context and there are rich threads that run through it that tell an incredible story of God and his creation and care of this world. The ideas aren't new--but they are succinctly and quite beautifully conveyed. It is very accessible. Only takes an hour or so to read. I highly recommend it.
A favourite quote "We are to live in between the two ends of the story. We are to be the new world, in amongst the old. We are cracks in space and time, letting the future in, and it is through communities living like this, led by the Holy Spirit, that God is redeeming his creation."
I wish there had been something like The Insect and Buffalo available when I was a teenager. It explains how the biblical narrative is all telling the same story; that its not just a whole lot of disjointed accounts of particular people throughout history; that I'm part of that very same story. It certainly would have made the transition to university (college), and then into the workforce, easier.
When I was growing up, I was taught to summarize the Bible something like this God sent Jesus to earth to die so I didn't have to. That's over simplifying it, but it left me with a lot of questions about the Bible. If the Christian faith is mainly about Jesus, why does it take him so long to turn up? Why not just have the gospels, the creation account and those stories we get taught in Sunday School? I couldn't see what I was supposed to do with all the other bits, so I did what most people do, I suppose - I didn't really read them. I was also unsure of how what I read was supposed to shape me.
I've given copies of this to friends and have encouraged others to buy it. Some where grandparents and others were teenagers. It reads like it was written for adults, but it's definately worth getting copies for youth and young adults you know. The Insect and Buffalo is not the first book I read that showed me how the whole Bible fits together, but it is the shortest, and a fairly easy read.
I was pleasantly caught by surprise as I read the "most famous book of all time" in a fresh, simple, and engaging narrative.
